No ticket (ticketless event)
August 31st, 2001
American Music Festival Virginia Beach, VA
I don't find any photos at the moment... I thought I took some, if I find them, I'll post later on. The concert was ticket-less. It was a free show at the Virginia Beach Music Festival at Virginia Beach, VA and takes place on the Beachfront. The band was NOT good, that stage was bad acoustically. We did obtain a photo below though (for $5.00 from a vendor), but we have no tickets (ticketless event) and we didn't take photos I guess... Parking is not free however. Finding a place to park is challenging and if you try to park in front of houses or in parking lots that are NOT selling spaces, then you will get towed. Tow trucks are abundant this day. I think they get the most money this weekend than they do all year.

Harbor Pavilion, Portsmouth, VA with STYX
Photos aren't great because we aren't allowed to take photos at all, and not only could we not use a flash, but you aren't allowed to move from your seats. I had a digital camera that didn't have high shutter speed; everything looks blurry at night when even in tiny bit of motion. This is the best I could do. Styx was really great and Kansas sounded pretty good. Mostly, it was their unique instrumentation that is their trademark, that made it a good show. Kansas played first; they were better than last year big time, but they are not as great live as in studio recordings; the lead singer's voice seems to be going out. The band is getting old and out of shape, but they can play great still. The far right photo below we bought at the concert. It's unsigned, but an autographed program we got from them, is below.
Left to right: three poor photos of the band Kansas. I couldn't make out who is who.

Kansas played a free concert (no tickets required) at Langley Air Force Base during their annual Air Show. We took a lot more photos, but this shows all the band members and is a good representation. They sang a lot of new stuff and they waited to the very end to play their three largest hits (Point of No Return, Carry On (My Wayward Son) and Dust in the Wind). Jeremy (son #2) attended this (his first concert which is amazing that he's never been to a concert before).
Left to Right:1) Kansas 2) Phil Ehart (Drummer/Percussion) 3) Steve Walsh (Keyboard and vocals) and David Ragsdale (Violin and Guitar) 4) Richard Williams (Lead Guitar) 5) Billy Greer (Bass Guitar and Vocals) and Steve Walsh again 6) Kansas (whole band).

Virginia Beach Amphitheatre, Virginia Beach, VA with guests Styx and Foreigner
We thought they sounded much better at this venue. I like the music for sure. It's the singing that is lacking. They are whizzes as the fiddle and guitar and all the instruments; nobody can doubt that! Their set was shorter. They were followed by Styx and then Foreigner. The wristband at top is because we were in the front row (yay). I enjoyed that a lot and it's practically necessary as I am losing my eyesight. What was really enjoyable was that they didn't let anyone else go through and block our view, or people to come up to the stage and crowd us. It was great! The photos below kind of suck. The reason is we were not sure my camera would be allowed in the venue. Being in the front row, we thought perhaps the camera phone would work. It doesn't of course. Everyone always takes these photos but they all suck... after Kansas, we chanced the larger camera and they allowed it. Hence the better photos for Styx and Foreigner. Members include: Phil Ehart (Drums), Billy Greer (Bass/Vocals), Dave Ragsdale (Violin/Guitar), Steve Walsh (Keyboard/Vocals), Richard WIlliams (Guitar)
Left to Right:1) Richard Williams and Steve Walsh 2) Dave Ragsdale and Billy Greer 3) Richard Williams and Steve Walsh 4) Richard Williams, Dave Ragsdale and Billy Greer 5) The Entire band: Kansas
Left to Right:1) this is the position we were in; shows the space between the front row and the stage. 2) Everyone but the drummer. Seems Scott missed the drummer! We have no photos of Phil Ehart.
