We decided it was time to travel to Shenandoah for a mid-week vacation. We figured fall in mid-week was the best way to see the fall colors as well as beat the crowds. So our trip was Tuesday through Thursday. I usually (actually never) have included hotels and inns in my travel pages, but I thought this one was sort of worth mentioning. It's probably the second best hotel I've stayed in so far. I did have some problems with it, but it was a lovely looking place, inside and out. It was big enough to be classified as a hotel, but it was quiet, attention to detail inside and out and was homey. The rooms were clean. My problems were as follows: We got a "package" which included for two nights (nearly 500.. I forget, was like 470 I think) stay, two passes to the caverns (38.00 value), two passes to the zoo (20.00 value), and a 75.00 certificate to use at the hotel restaurant. No problem with the passes but there was a problem with the food ... there were two restaurants. One was the main dining room and for dinner, it required dressing up and had overly fancy food (unnecessarily so as you know the type... a lot of sauce and sprigs of garnish with a tiny plate of something you don't know what it is). Anyway, after dissecting the menu, we found the dinners there to be too pricy and not to our tastes. We aren't "refined" I guess. I don't need horseradish mashed potatoes, I just want plain ones! Anyway, we asked if we could use the certificate at the other place and they said yes. So we went there and the bill was like 28.00 before tip. That left nearly 2/3 left on the certificate, but we were told we could not use it again! One dinner only!!! So after talking with the hotel manager, he agreed to let us use it again. We chose to use it at breakfast. That was about 30.00 as well, leaving still a good amount left. Again, we had to ask to use it and they were hesitant but allowed us. Do not give in! If you want it, ask for it. The breakfast was ok but not the best. The potatoes were very spicy and the bacon undercooked. I don't like biscuits and there was nothing in the way of an alternative bread-wise. Anyway, I'd recommend skipping the restaurants there and eating elsewhere. We ate a great sandwich at a Bistro up the street one day. It was better than the hotels . . . but a lot of people seem to like the food. If you like fish and don't mind fancy sauces etc, go for it but be prepared to pay. I think dinners were about 20-40 dollars average. The other restaurant was better with 10-15 dollar meals. But I still liked the rooms and thought the quiet in the halls was worth the price.
