October 21st, 2008 Luray Singing Tower, Luray, VA
We decided it was time to travel to Shenandoah for a mid-week vacation. We figured fall in mid-week was the best way to see the fall colors as well as beat the crowds. So our trip was Tuesday through Thursday. We didn't realize what this was but it was right in the middle lane between the Luray Caverns and the Luray Zoo almost... so we kept passing it so went up to it. It was a gift to the town from Colonel Northcott, a well known citizen from the town of Luray.. It's also known as the Belle Brown Northcott Memorial. It was erected in 1937 in memory of Colonel T.C. Northcott's wife. It stands 117 feet high and contains a carillon of 47 bells with the largest bell weighing 7,640 pounds (it's six feet in diameter). You can't go inside of it. They hold "recitals" 2 times on the Weekends (I think 2 PM Sat and Sun). Chairs are outside then for people to hear. There's a small pond to gaze at and a nice grassy area with flowers, trees and bushes (like a small park) where a picnic might be nice. Nothing special needed here except a camera.
